Work hours calculator

Enter your start time, end time, and break to calculate how many hours you worked in a shift. The result is shown in decimal hours, the format most payroll systems use. Overnight shifts are handled automatically.

Enter when your shift started and ended. Add break time if you took an unpaid break. Works for overnight shifts too.

How this calculator works

Enter the time you started work and the time you finished. If you took an unpaid break, enter the break length in minutes. The calculator subtracts the break and shows your total hours worked. If your end time is earlier than your start time, it assumes you worked an overnight shift that crossed midnight.

Everything runs in your browser. Nothing you type is sent anywhere or stored.

Minutes to decimal hours

Payroll systems and most time cards use decimal hours, so 7 hours 45 minutes is written as 7.75. Divide the minutes by 60, or use the table.

MinutesDecimal hoursExample
50.088 h 05 min = 8.08
100.178 h 10 min = 8.17
150.258 h 15 min = 8.25
200.338 h 20 min = 8.33
300.508 h 30 min = 8.50
400.678 h 40 min = 8.67
450.758 h 45 min = 8.75
500.838 h 50 min = 8.83

Working out a full week

Run the calculator once per shift and add the results together. To turn the total into a pay estimate, use the paycheck calculator, which also handles overtime hours at a higher rate. If you fill out a paper time card, the time card calculator guide explains how to total it.

When a calculator stops being enough

This calculator is useful for a single shift. If you work several shifts a week, you need somewhere to keep them. Shiftly is a free hours tracker app for iPhone that clocks you in with one tap, tracks breaks and tips, and keeps running weekly totals and earnings estimates, so the math on this page happens automatically.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate hours worked?

Subtract your start time from your end time, then subtract any unpaid break time. For example, if you worked 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM with a 30-minute break, you worked 7.5 hours.

How do I convert minutes to decimal hours?

Divide the minutes by 60. 15 minutes is 0.25 hours, 30 minutes is 0.5, and 45 minutes is 0.75. So 7 hours 45 minutes is 7.75 hours, which is what most payroll systems use.

Does this calculator handle overnight shifts?

Yes. If your end time is earlier than your start time (for example, 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM), the calculator assumes you worked through midnight.

Can I save my calculated hours?

This web calculator does not save anything. To keep a record of every shift and get weekly totals, use the Shiftly iPhone app, which is free to download.
